Knottingley Library will move into the town’s sports centre after council bosses rubberstamped plans to sell the land to a retail developer.
The Hill Top library will move into the sports centre next door later this year to make way for a retail development on land known locally as The Close.
Planning bosses approved plans to build a food outlet and four retail units with parking last month after the council’s cabinet agreed to sell the existing library site and adjoining recreational land.
Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for libraries, said: “We are really pleased to confirm that the current library provision in Knottingley will be moving to the local sports centre later this year.
“Plans are currently under way for the refurbishment. This is part of wider plan of delivering an improved library service for residents across the district.”
Knottingley councillor Graham Stokes said the move would safeguard the future of the library while providing jobs in the town.
