Painting project brightens up block of flats

A TEAM of offenders are transforming Pontefract’s Horsefair flats in a community payback project.
The group are working with officers from Pontefract and Knottingley neighbourhood team (NPT) to paint the corridors of the Horsefair complex – covering up graffiti which has blighted the flats for many years.
The scheme is part of a police project to improve the lives of residents in the ten towers, which also sees officers holding drop-in surgeries at Luke William House, creating information drop-off points for residents to contact police and launching a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in each complex.
PCSO Steve Dye, of the NPT, formed the action plan and asked for help from the community payback team.
He said: “I have already spoken to many of the Horsefair residents and they highlighted to me that the current state of the entry points to their respective blocks need painting and brightening up.
“I wanted to involve community payback in a project to paint all the stairways in the flats that have been blighted by graffiti over the years to make the entry points a more pleasing place to walk through.
“I would like to thanks Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) and community oayback for supporting us with this stage of the regeneration of the flats.”
In the project, PCSO Dye has launched a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Violet Prichard House, with an NPT officer assigned to every block.
PCSO Dye, who will work with occupants at Francis Lane House and Violet Prichard House, will also visit residents to help them mark their property with ultra-violet pens to deter thieves.

“This regeneration work is another example of how Pontefract and Knottingley NPT are working in partnership with WDH to tackle problems that matter to our communities.”
