Pontefract Castle jubilee spectacular

PONTEFRACT Castle will be covered in picnic blankets over the bank holiday as partygoers dressed in red, white and blue come together to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
The spectacular event – organised by Wakefield Council – will see residents entertained by circus workshops, magicians, puppeteers, musicians and dancers in the castle grounds from noon to 4pm on Monday June 4.
There will also be a fancy dress competition for youngsters with a king and queens theme which will be judged by Coun David Dagger, the council’s cabinet member for culture at noon where prizes will be given for the top three, with high street shopping vouches up for grabs.
During the evening event – which will include a firework display and West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra concert – a beacon will be lit at 10.15pm as part of the national celebrations for the diamond jubilee that will link 2,012 official beacon lighting ceremonies across the country on June 3 and 4.
Coun Denise Jeffery, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “I am very excited about all the diamond jubilee celebrations taking place across the district, I hope it will be a fantastic weekend.
“The celebrations at the castle are a great way to mark the occasion, with something for everyone. If you haven’t managed to get a ticket for the evening event, you can still come along and get involved in the activities happening throughout the day time.
“No matter where you are celebrating the Jubilee or who you’re celebrating it with, we want everyone across the district to come together, get involved and most importantly have a great time. “
Free tickets for the evening ceremony – which starts at 7.15pm – have sold out but residents attending the day event do not need tickets to enter the castle.
Parking at Pontefract Castle is very limited, so residents are asked, where possible, to use public transport to get to the events. Pontefract bus station, Monkhill and Tanshelf railway stations are all less than half a mile away from the castle.
