Elsa the German Shepherd, who featured the Express's new year dog rehoming appeal, has found a new home with Paul Wood and Kim Shepherd at The Steam Packet pub in Knottingley.

A HOMELESS pooch who featured in the Express has found a new home at a Knottingley pub.

Elsa the German shepherd was one of the animals at Ponderosa Rescue Kennels and Cattery in Allerton Bywater in need of a new home – as reported in the Express two weeks ago.

She has now moved in with her new owners Paul Wood, 46, and his partner Kim Shepherd, new landlords of the Steam Packet pub on Racca Green.

Paul said: “I’ve always had dogs and we’ve just moved to this area and taken on the pub, so I asked our regulars where there was a good animal shelter and they recommended Ponderosa.

“When I turned up there I just took one look and fell in love with her. It’s like she’s been here forever. It was only when I arrived at the pub with her that one of the regulars said ‘that’s the dog out of the paper’.

“She’s absolutely beautiful and has such a fantastic temperament – she’s just devoted to me and follows me everywhere. Our customers love her her, they all want to take her home.

“To me a pub without a dog is like a pub without beer, I’ve always had pubs that are dog friendly. It’s lovely to see them in the bar.”

Ponderosa, on Ninevah Lane, has been struggling to cope with rising numbers and falling donations as people are forced to give up their animals due to the ongoing financial crisis.

Anyone who is interested in donating to the shelter, or adopting an animal, can call the centre on 01977 552303 or 516713.
