CALLIGRAPHER Terry Sykes has found the write way to success after coming top in an international handwriting competition.

Terry, 74, of Houndhill Lane, Purston, won second prize in the over 65 category of the USA-based World Handwriting Contest 2012 artistic handwriting section.

It was the first time Terry, who is chairman of Pontefract Calligraphers, had entered a writing competition, and he said: “It was a pleasant surprise to do so well.

“They sent a script, a block of text that we had to copy down the words in whatever our idea for an artistic handwriting style.

“It didn’t necessarily have to stick with one style – copperplate or gothic for example – and my calligraphy tutor said a script that I was doing a piece of work in, a combination of flourished italic and my own personal handwriting style, looked attractive on the page, so I did it in that.”

Pontefract Calligraphers meets every week at Carleton Community High School, as well as holding workshops throughout the community, and is always looking for new members.

Terry, who joined the group 11 years ago, added: “We stress that people don’t need to have any experience at all and we give the first session free of charge so they can have a go.”
