Girl power will be reaching out to youngsters in Castleford, Pontefract and Knottingley as part of an education drive by rugby chiefs.

Castleford Tigers’ Trust is introducing ‘girl empowerment days’ as part of their multi-sports scheme to encourage teenage girls to get active.

The two-year Sport for Change project has already reached 2,000 girls at Airedale High School, Brigshaw High School, Carleton Community High School and De Lacy Academy, offering classes such as zumba and ultimate frisbee, as well as lifestyle workshops on sexual health, substance use and money.

Adam Strafford, Sport for Change project manager at the Trust, said, “We are delighted with the progress we have made so far. It is not easy to get girls to open up when talking about these types of lifestyle issues but we have managed to break down barriers much quicker than expected.

“It has helped that the schools have embraced the project and really value the support it is giving to those pupils who take part.”

The empowerment days will work with organisations including West Yorkshire Police and soon include sessions at St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School and Castleford Academy.
