Race to finish line

Chris Petty, taking part in Manx Grand Prix

ACKWORTH motorcyclist Chris Petty is set to return to the Isle of Man to compete in the last 350cc Classic Manx Grand Prix race.

Chris – who took part in the event for the first time last year on a 1970 CB350 Honda – will compete on the world famous circuit again on August 27.

Last year’s race ended in disaster for Chris when, riding in fifth place, he broke down less than a mile from the finish line.

He said: “When I stopped in the race I did not know I was so far up the field after starting at number 23.

“Of course, I was bitterly disappointed when I found out that I had been in fifth place in my first ever classic race.

“I would like to thank Jagcats and the Boot Shoe for their support of my 2012 racing campaign and my target for ths year is to finish the race, hopefully in the top ten and maybe even on the podium.”

Chris made Isle of Man TT history when he competed in the inaugural TTXGP race – for non-carbon emitting motorcycles – in 2009.

The race consisted of two classes with Chris coming second in the open class, for machines which cost less than £20,000 to build.

He was leading the race by over a minute, reaching speeds of 90mph, when one of the battery cells in his electricity-powered machine ruptured eight miles from the finish, resulting in the motor losing power.

Chris received a massive cheer from the enthusiastic TT crowd when he kept the machine going to roll over the finish line.
