PINT-sized journalists at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Pontefract swapped their homework for news writing after launching a school newspaper.

The editorial team of six – who wrote news, sport, and feature stories for the St Joseph’s Star – printed the first edition last month.

Louise Limbert, a parent who organised the newspaper group, said: “I wanted to help the children showcase their work so they can take pride in what they do.

“They have learnt how to interview, how to gather facts and how to write in a interesting and concise manner.

“It’s been a wonderful experience for them and many of the children have said they are thinking about journalism as a potential career.”

Mrs Limbert said she hoped the paper – to be printed each term – would improve the children’s literacy and team building skills.

Celest Appleton, a year six pupil, said: “Writing for the newspaper has inspired me to carry on with journalism and I would like to be an entertainment editor for a girls’ magazine one day in the future.”

Profits from selling the newspaper will go back into the school’s student council fund to buy items for new initiatives, including plants for a new garden.

Headteacher Darren Redfern said: “Any child can have a go at writing, interviewing, entering competitions or taking photographs ready for publication.”
