World record Zumba attempt at Brigshaw High school

SPORTY pupils kicked off a week of Olympic celebrations by earning themselves a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

More than 3,000 children took part in a zumba session at Allerton Bywater’s Brigshaw High School on Monday, smashing the previous world record of 3,105 set in Cairns, Australia, with 3,302 youngsters taking part. The school is now waiting for Guinness to confirm the record.

It marked the start of the Brigshaw Co-operative Trust’s international Olympic and Paralympic event, with more than 200 students from 16 schools around the world, including China, Zimbabwe, Gambia and across Europe on an exchange trip with students from Brigshaw High and the eight trust primary schools in Allerton Bywater and Kippax, along with Methley Primary School – all of whom took part in the world record bid.

Liz Merriman, teacher and international links co-ordinator, who organised the zumba event, said: “It was absolutely fantastic, we had children from the primary schools, our students, members of the community and carers all taking part. The children were really engaged, they really enjoyed it.”

To break the record, the pupils had to complete 30 minutes of zumba, and Castleford Tigers Paws cheerleaders also came along to help them warm up.

Other events during the week include a civic reception in Leeds, a day of student Olympic and Paralympic Games, a community fun day at Brigshaw High School on Saturday, culminating in seeing the Olympic torch arrive in Leeds on Sunday.
