FEATHERSTONE man Shayne Hoult has set himself a watery challenge by swimming the length of the English Channel to raise cash for a spinal injuries charity.

Shayne, 33, has to swim 22 miles in 12 weeks as part of the Aspire Channel Swim challenge – and has already completed five miles at Pontefract baths. He said he was inspired to do the challenge by his friends, one who is already taking part, and another who has a spinal cord injury as a result of a spinal abcess.

Shayne, of Featherstone Grove, said: “This is the first time I’ve done any proper swimming in about five years, and it’s the first time I’ve done something like this at all. It’s a good way of getting fit, plus I’m doing something for someone else.”

Shayne originally set himself a fundraising target of £100, but has already got £234 in sponsorship, and is now also hoping to get support from local firms so he can hold a raffle to further boost his total.

He added: “I’m doing most of the swim at Pontefract pool, but when I get close to finishing I’m going to Knottingley pool, as there are benches there so I can invite a few people to see me finish the challenge.

“Next year I will try to swim the channel there and back.”

Visit www.justgiving.com/ACS2012-shaynehoult or www.aspirechannelswim.co.uk/shaynehoult to sponsor him and to see his progress online, or email him at shaynehoult@yahoo.co.uk to offer raffle prizes.
