Six Pontefract schools are set to become academies if council chiefs approve the plans at a meeting next week.

The King’s School, Lark’s Hill J&I School, Carleton Community High School, Halfpenny Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School and Orchard Head J&I School have all applied to opt out of local authority control – joining 30 other schools across the district.

The report to Wakefield Council’s cabinet committee said the governing bodies of each of the Schools resolved to apply for academy status as a member of the Pontefract Education Trust (PET).

A statement from PET in the report said: “Our main reason for converting into a multi-academy trust is a response to a shift in government policy and the speed in which it is being implemented around the desire for all schools to be academies, either converter or sponsored.

“The six schools, following discussions with individual governing bodies made the decision to convert as a multi-academy trust.

“The freedoms and extra resources that academy status will bring are also factors which will enable us to provide the best possible education for the young people of Pontefract and support the wider community.”

The report said The King’s School, Lark’s Hill and Carleton High schools were all deemed ‘good’ at their last Ofsted inspections and their academy applications were approved last October.

It added applications for Halfpenny Lane, Orchard Head and The Rookeries schools were approved at the same time, and each site was deemed ‘satisfactory’ at their last inspection.

Academies are publicly-funded independent schools, which arefree from local authority and national government control.
