Sky’s the limit youth group
A FILM production company wants to give a voice to youth groups and school pupils across the Five Towns by teaching them how to make their own movies.
Hurricanesky Media – set up last year by Ben Phillips and Stephen Frost – produces films and promotional videos, and works on special effects for independent movie directors nationwide.
The Knottingley company’s bosses are now seeking funding to enrol more youngsters in their voluntary youth group, called Hurricanesky Film School.
Mr Frost, 49, of Broomhill Avenue, said: “We set up the film school with a view to give something back to the community.
“There are a lot of young people in the area, some from deprived backgrounds, who have a tremendous amount of talent but no way to express it or learn.
“Making films is such a great way to get your point of view out there and also give pupils great skills which they can put on their CVs and transfer to other digital roles.
“We will teach them everything from filming, to editing and producing and if their films are really good we will enter them in festivals and competitions.
“The sky’s the limit and we want youngsters to come and get some hands-on experience with the filming equipment and enjoy the social side of our group.
“We need to continually raise funds to keep the group going but if we have enough cash to buy good quality equipment, scenery, costumes and a second hand mini bus to take the children to the places they want to film, then we can offer something really special and unique to the younger people of our district.”
Mr Frost – who has more than 20 years’ experience in the film industry and has worked on a number of animated movies over the last few years – said the group will also be available to teach lessons at local schools.
He added: “We have already done some work with De Lacy Academy and the lessons went down really well with the pupils.
“We hope we will be able to reach more schools once the funding is available for us to get there.”
The group meets every Friday at 7.30pm at the Elim Pentecostal Church, on Tithe Barn Road. For more information call Mr Frost on 07851 570488.
