STUDENT Ben Shaw takes to the skies next month in memory of his stepbrother who died earlier this year.

The 20-year-old will plunge 10,000ft in a skydive to raise money for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) as a tribute to stepbrother Michael Land who died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), aged just 28.

Mr Shaw, of Viking Road, Pontefract, has so far collected around £200 in sponsorship, but wants to boost the total for he charity which raises awareness of SADS.

He said: “I’m not nervous about the jump at the moment but I’m sure I will be when I’m up there. Michael used to say you could do anything you wanted to, so I am determined to do this in his memory.”

Michael, who was due to get married next year, died while on an evening out with his friends and fiancee Louise Watling in February.

His dad, Gary Land, said: “Michael would be very proud of Ben for doing the skydive for such a good cause.

“Michael was such a caring, thoughtful person to all his family and friends, he loved his fitness, loved his rugby league and loved his life in general.

“We want to help stop people going through the pain and agony we’re going through now and to stop people dying at such a young age. CRY offers testing for 14 to 35-year-olds and we want to raise awareness of that.”

Mr Shaw’s skydive takes place at Bridlington airfield on June 9. The family is also organising a Three Peaks walk, football match and Leeds to Liverpool bike ride to raise more cash for the charity.
