Sporting chance

EXCITED bosses at the Glass Houghton Centre hope thousands of sporty residents will benefit from its new £120,000 multi use games area.

The Leeds Road centre’s state-of-the-art sports pitch – which can be used for a variety of ball and racket sports – was opened by Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper on Friday.

Derek Stead, project development officer at the centre, said: “We decided to spend the cash on the new games pitch because we had so many people wanting to use the one we opened about five years ago. We now have two and hope thousands of people from the local community will get the chance to use it.”

The multi use games area was funded by a £100,000 grant from the Coalfield Regeneration Trust and £20,000 donated by the Glass Houghton Community Forum.

Ms Cooper said: “It’s really important we make the most of the Olympic legacy. Lots of children and young people were inspired by watching Team GB on the television this summer and that’s why this new pitch and facilities at the Glass Houghton Centre is so fantastic.”
