SPORTY youngsters in Knottingley have been given a boost by a local supermarket which donated £250 towards new kit.
The football and rugby teams – run by PCSOs Simon Ragsdale and Aaron Riley from Pontefract and Knottingley neighbourhood policing team – received the donation from staff at Sainsbury’s, on Racca Green, last week.
The under 16 players, who meet at the Old Quarry Adventure Playground on Sundays, have been fitted with kits and drill tops for local matches.
PCSO Ragsdale said: “We are thrilled with the donation which will help us continue to break down barriers between the police and youths on the estate.
“Running the team has proven to decrease anti social behaviour calls, increase confidence and build valuable links with the general public.”
The cash was donated as part of Sainsbury’s Community Grant scheme, which helps charitable groups in the local community with cash from sales of ‘bags for life’.
Chris Cunningham, store manager, said “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it.”
