Stadium’s five figure grant

DISABLED facilities at Featherstone Rovers’ revamped stadium will be overhauled following a makeover.
Rugby chiefs last week announced details of a “significant grant” from a spinal injury charity which will be used to redevelop disabled services at the Big Fellas Stadium.
Trustees of the Stepping Stones Appeal – who did not want to reveal the grant amount – donated the cash to the Post Office Road club to build a viewing area, dedicated cafe and toilet facilities.
Craid Poskitt, Rovers’ chief executive, said: “We are grateful for the support we have received from Stepping Stones which allows us improve disabled facilities at the stadium.
“The redevelopment of the Railway End terrace is a unique and ambitious project which we feel will improve the experience of visiting the stadium for all supporters.”
The club began renovating its facilities last year with ambitious plans to extend the pitch by 20 metres and to increase the number of seats, to help meet Super League standards.
The new disabled area, which forms part of the redevelopment plans, will be dedicated to former Rovers player and appeal trustee, Ray Wilson.
Club bosses have also agreed a number of free tickets each season for both current and former patients of the spinal injury centre at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
Adam Perkin, honorary treasurer for the appeal, said “We are delighted to provide funds for the disabled viewing area for the new stand as part of our continuing support for the disabled and spinally injured.
“This should really enhance the match day experience for the users and the area will be dedicated to Ray Wilson, who was a great friend to the Appeal and served as a trustee for more than 20 years.”
Last month terracing and seats were demolished to make way for a covered stand bought from Scarborough Council, which will also include units for new businesses and sponsors.
The £150,000 project will move into its second phase later this month when the training pitch behind the terracing is be levelled to make way for constructing the stands.
