Stadium’s green light
DELIGHTED rugby league chiefs are celebrating a future stadium revamp after getting the green light from planning bosses.
Featherstone Rovers received the go-ahead from Wakefield Council last week to overhaul their Post Office Road ground with extra seating and a longer pitch.
Redevelopment of the stadium – which includes putting up two stands to increase seating to around 8,000 people – puts the club a step closer to hitting Super League criteria.
Craig Poskitt, chief executive of the club, said: “This is fantastic news in the history of Featherstone Rovers.
“A lot of hard work has gone in to this project already particularly from Paul Coventry, the board of directors, and some fantastic volunteers.
“I would also like to extend our thanks to the council for the assistance we have received during the planning permission process.”
Club bosses applied for planning permission in June to put up two stands recycled from the former Scarborough FC, which will give Rovers an extra 2,500 covered seats and bring them closer to meeting the gold standard criteria required by the Rugby Football League.
The project also includes installing new floodlights and lengthening the pitch by around 15 metres to meet standards for hosting international games.
Mr Poskitt added: “Permission means that we can now start in earnest improving our famous stadium whilst other clubs stand still.
“The development will improve the overall spectator experience of visiting the Big Fellas Stadium and is a significant boost commercially for the club as we grow in a sustainable fashion.
“This is also fantastic news for Featherstone and surrounding areas. Our plans mean that the whole community will benefit from the development, not just the club.”
Original proposals for the stadium included moving the pitch to make way for housing at the Railway Terrace end of the site but the scheme was dropped in favour of lengthening the pitch.
Club chiefs hope future plans for the stadium could include allowing local businesses to set up office space at the ground.
