A NEW exhibition focusing on the river Aire in Castleford is taking place at Bridge Arts this month.

The exhibition focuses on Alison Drake’s 2009 book Thomas, the story of Thomas the barge, which has balanced on the River Aire weir since vandals let it loose in a storm in 1977.

She said: “We thought we would push it up as a prelude to the mill project because its part of the story of the regeneration of the river, and local schools have been using the book as part of their curriculum, visiting the bridge and the river.

“Children from Fairburn Infant School visited the mill and the river and bridge just before Christmas, as at the moment their theme is rivers so they are using the Thomas book as part of it.”

The exhibition features illustrations from the book, along with pictures of the Tom Pudding boats and pits along the river.

Alison added: “The exhibition, like the book, uses the story of the way we’ve used rivers in the past, and how its changed, the pollution that affected it, and then as it was cleaned up.”

The exhibition runs at Bridge Arts until January 31, Mondays to Saturdays.
