A NEW project to inspire girls to stretch their sporting interests has been launched by Castleford Tigers Trust.

The registered community charity of Castleford Tigers, started the two-year Sport for Change project with a presentation to year ten pupils at Knottingley’s De Lacy Academy.

The programme – funded by Sport Relief – aims to encourage youngsters to take up sport and increase awareness of health and fitness topics affecting young women in the area.

Adam Strafford, project manager, said: “We want to raise aspirations as well as increase the confidence and motivation of young girls in the Castleford district in order to encourage them to make more informed and positive choices in the future.

“We will be using sport to develop the girls’ physical capabilities as well as highlight the social, emotional and mental well-being benefits associated with physical activity.”

The project, run in conjunction with Wakefield Council, Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Police and Youth Services, offers a range of sport lessons and workshops, which will cover topics including drug awareness, sexual health and teenage pregnancy.

The programme was launched by MP Yvette Cooper on Friday

Mr Strafford added: “We were delighted Yvette Cooper could be here at the launch to support the project and we look forward to delivering the programme over the next two years.”

Ms Cooper said: “After the inspiration of the Olympics and Paralympics this is a fantastic time for young people to get inspired and healthy through sport.

“It’s great that Castleford Tigers is launching this programme. For the club to do so much work with local schools and the community is really important.”
