A PONTEFRACT pensioner has praised a support programme which helped her back onto her feet after breaking her hip.

Jean Plimmer, 79, could have faced a life of being housebound following a hip replacement, but thanks to a six-week stay in a rehabilitation centre followed by a programme to help her regain her independence has, she has, in her own words, “learnt to live again”.

Mrs Plimmer, of Elm Park, said: “I am an outgoing and sociable person, so breaking my hip and having to be virtually housebound, as probably would have been the case some years ago would have been really difficult for me to cope with.”

She attended Bullenshaw Day Centre in Hemsworth for renablement, a short-term intensive support programme for people who need help regaining their independence, following her surgery.

Mrs Plimmer added: “The team gave me so much help and support, without which I am convinced my recovery would have been so much slower.

“They gave me the confidence to walk, so when I left the scheme I was able to go out on my own and walk around town. I am an ex-dancer, so my first love is dancing. Thanks to all the treatment, help and support, I am grateful that I have the confidence to still get up and dance from time to time.”

Jo Webster, accountable officer at NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “A lot of the patients we see are frail, elderly but who can, with the support of the reablement service, live a happy independent life. ”
