DISAPPOINTED councillors have been forced to cancel Featherstone’s annual gala tomorrow (July 7).
The town council decided at a meeting this afternoon to axe the event due to adverse weather conditions.
Graham Wilson, town council clerk, said: “The town council is extremely disappointed, especially with all the hard work that has been undertaken.
“We are particularly disappointed for all the people of Featherstone who were looking forward to a special diamond jubilee-themed event.”
Earlier today Ackworth Howard CE J&I School was fully closed due to wet weather.
Wakefield Council also announced that Stranglands Lane at Ferrybridge has been closed due to flooding under the railway, and Arriva has been forced to divert the 148/149/150 service away from the road.
The entrance to Fryston village is now blocked due to water and Arriva’s 188 cannot service the village.
A flood alert remains in place at the River Aire middle catchment. Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency are closely monitoring the situation and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have issued advice on how to prepare for flooding here www.westyorksfire.gov.uk/news/flooding-be-prepared
