Town’s ghostly charity walk
GHOST hunters will descend on Pontefract’s spookiest venues this Halloween to raise cash for three local good causes.
Four mediums will guide brave residents around the town’s most haunted locations – including the Red Lion and the Malt Shovel pubs and the town’s former cinema – on October 31 to raise cash for brain injury charity Second Chance, and disability charity Able2 and CG Dance Studios in Pontefract.
Spooky events company Pontefract Paranormal – set up last month following a wave of interest in the town’s history after the premiere of a horror film shot in Chequerfield – organised the ticket-only event.
Emma Southward – who co-founded the Featherstone-based company – said: “We feel that this ghost walk will not only raise cash for three great causes, but also encourage interest in our beautiful little town, which will hopefully start encouraging Wakefield Council to use our history as a selling point.
“Before setting up the business, we organised a charity ghost walk at C G Dance Studios to raise cash for the dancers to go to the West End.
“The response to this was amazing, so we decided to approach the Red Lion and the Malt Shovel to use those two buildings as well.
“We approached Adam Beddis, who used to run ghost walks in town, who thought it was an amazing idea to raise cash on Halloween for more charities, and launch this as a tourism business, so Pontefract Paranormal was born.”
“Lots of people agree with us the town is dying and that other towns of the same ilk, like Beverley and York, use the history of the area to encourage tourism and retail in the area. Unfortunately this isn’t the case in Pontefract.
“This is a shame because Pontefract was one of the most important towns in Britain in years gone by.”
Fundraisers will meet under the town hall clock at 7pm for the first over 15s ghost walk, which costs £5.
Residents can also sign up for a whole night event which will visit all three haunted locations, where there will be ghost hunts with local mediums.
The whole night event – for over 18s only – costs £40 and will end at around 3am with refreshments provided by the Malt Shovel.
