Trust on right path for long-term hospital health

HOSPITAL chiefs are making good progress on developing a long-term solution for the future of Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The trust, which runs Pontefract, Pinderfields and Dewsbury District hospitals, has met with the newly-formed NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) to review its position.

Interim trust chief executive Stephen Eames revealed in July the trust would not be able to reach Foundation Trust (FT) status by the government deadline of 2014 due to its financial position – it is expected to have a deficit of £26m by the end of this year and also has to make £24m in government-set savings annually.

However, the TDA – which will be responsible for providing support and managing the performance of trusts which have not reached FT status – said the trust’s current leadership team should continue to take forward the work to identify a long-term solution.

The trust is currently tackling its financial problems and is carrying out a wide-ranging reorganisation of its clinical services. It has also started discussions with other local health and social care service providers with a view to developing partnerships for the delivery of specialist and local services.

Mr Eames said: “They are saying the team is focused and doing the right things and we want to continue that. I think that’s positive in terms of ongoing work to grasp the issues. What we are going to do in the next 18 months is work with our colleagues and the wider NHS system and TDA about what the long-term future might be.

“Our first priority will always be to ensure people using our services receive excellent, safe care.”
