A Castleford pub which prides itself on its real ales and old fashioned service has won a pub of the year award.

The Junction, on Carlton Street, scooped the annual award presented by the prize of Wakefield District Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The pub, which received the award last Thursday, also won the CAMRA pub of the season.

Landlady Maureen Shaw said: “It’s very nice to be recognised. It’s been a lot of hard work but it’s been worth it.

“The pub was shut for 12 months before we came in and we have put a lot of effort into it to get it running like an old pub.”

Ms Shaw, 58, has run the pub with her partner Neil Midgley, 56, for the last two-and-a-half years.

The couple pride themselves on the real ales available in the pub.

Ms Shaw added: “The wooden barrels we’ve got have gone down really well.

“We can serve beer straight from the wood which is what everybody likes - it’s like going back to the olden days.”

The pub scooped the award after coming out on top of the Wakefield District CAMRA members votes.

Bob Wallis, pubs officer for Wakefield CAMRA, said: “Neil and Maureen have put Castleford on the real ale scene.”
