Work starts at Lambson site

LONG-PLANNED new homes at the former Lambson chemical site in Castleford are finally under construction after developers signed an agreement with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) for a £2.5m loan.

The loan will help developers Greenhaven Homes build up to 66 new homes at Navigation Point in phase one of its development of the site, through the government’s Get Britain Building programme.

John Gladwyn, development manager at Greenhaven, said: “We have been working on this site for the last seven years and I am delighted that we are now in a position to start construction with the assistance of the HCA.

This will be a special housing development with approximately 1km of water frontage within walking distance of the town centre and has excellent transport links.”

Plans for new housing at the site have been on the cards since 2005, with a planning application submitted in 2009, however the scheme has stalled due to the economic downturn.

Craig Johns, HCA area manager, said: “This is the first Get Britain Building project to be confirmed in Yorkshire and will be great news for local people since it will ensure that these new family homes will be built much sooner as a result of our loan.

Building these homes will also ensure that 40 jobs in local building firms are safeguarded.”

Building work has just started with the first homes due to be complete by spring next year.

Wakefield Council deputy leader Denise Jeffery, said: “This is very good news for housing and the economy in Castleford and wider district.

“The scheme will enable people to access much needed new homes. It will revitalise a derelict brownfield site in the town and enhance access to the waterfront.”
