PROFESSIONAL wrestling star Katie Allerton has opened a training school to teach Knottingley youngsters how to smack down opponents and rumble in the ring.

Katie – known as Vix EnNoir to fans – has opened the club with fiancé Andrew Burrow and his brother Gareth after starring in wrestling shows across Yorkshire for three years.

The 30-year-old performer, who is also jointly owns wrestling company Vix KGW Promotions with Gareth, said: “I got into wrestling through friends, I would go along and help them out at shows to begin with before trying it out for myself.

“I was never interested when I was little but my brothers watched it on TV. It wasn’t until I tried it out that I realised how much fun it was and how exciting it is to be in a show with people cheering you on.”

The training school runs weekly classes teaching youngsters aged seven and above on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the converted warehouse on Lamb Inn Road.

Katie added: “A lot of kids love wrestling but they do it in their own gardens where they could get hurt, but we are teaching them the proper way to do it.

“Their parents trust us with them and it’s not just learning the moves, the training sessions teach them respect and discipline.

“It’s already helping a lot of youngsters as they are not just hanging around on street corners, they are meeting people and making new friends.

“Andrew, Brett Bell, our assistant trainer, Gareth and myself all teach the old school British-style wrestling which involves wrist locks and head locks.

“We also teach the students how to safely climb up onto the top rope, which is a pretty daunting thing to do, and so it’s helping build their confidence as well.

“We would like as many people as possible to be involved with the training school, I’d especially like some more girls to come down and try it out.”

Katie and Andrew – known in the ring as Tiger McGuigon Junior – will be appearing in a wrestling show of five matches and a rumble, involving seven to ten wrestlers, at Glass Houghton WMC on Leeds Road, on Friday September 21.

Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm.

Tickets cost £3 and proceeds will go back into the training school to buy crash mats and decorate the building.
