Pontefract and Castleford jobless total rises to highest in 16 years

The number of people claiming out-of-work benefits across the Pontefract and Castleford area rose to its highest in 16 years last month.

There were 3,683 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) across the Five Towns in February, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.

The figure is the highest since February 1997 and comes as the number of people claiming JSA nationwide rose for the first time in a year to 2.52m.
