Pupils at Fairburn Community Primary School are set to get busy with books after being given two e-readers by a supermarket.

Asda is sponsoring the Great North Road school and donated the e-readers as part of a bid to boost children’s reading.

School headteacher Emma Cornhill said: “We’re really keen to raise our children’s enjoyment of reading, given the competition with gaming and social media.”

The school has been working on improving reading for the last year, and has raised funds with the help of parents and the community to buy new reading books for the school library.

It has also organised visits each term to the local library and children have been learning about authors and reading a wide range of books.

Mrs Cornhill added: “We’ve got more up-to-date books, they are brighter, more interesting and stimulating with a larger range of genres. We’ve also had a reading competition, to see who could read in the most unusual place.”

The school now hopes to raise enough money to buy three more e-readers so children can use them during lessons.

Mrs Cornhill said: “We are really excited about the donation from Asda.

“We still firmly believe in the importance of children having access to books, but we must also harness modern technology and prepare our children for the world today.

“We also feel that using the e-readers will motivate some of our more reluctant readers.”
