Councillors slept out on the steps of Wakefield Cathedral on Friday night raising around £1,000 for homeless charities across the district.

Pontefract North councillor Paula Sheriff organised the sleep out which has raised the cash for Trinity Methodist Mission in Castleford, St Saviour’s Trust in Pontefract and St Catherine’s in Wakefield.

She said: “It was absolutely great, although it got very cold, about minus three. Seven of us managed to last the entire night, including an 11-year-old, whose grandfather is a councillor.

“We had cross-party support, which was great, Conservative group leader Coun Geoff Walsh was among those supporting the event, and for us all to be supporting homeless people is really good.”

Around 30 people took part in the event during the evening, and the group was joined by a homeless service user, while they were brought hot drinks and soup by well-wishers.

Coun Sheriff added: “It was a fantastic success and we are just planning what we are going to do next in terms of future fundraising events.”
