Star runner Emily Plimmer scored gold when she took part in the West Yorkshire Sainsbury’s Winter School Games Festival.

The year four pupil at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Pontefract won first place in the West Yorkshire cross country final at Leeds Metropolitan University, braving bad weather.

She said: “I really enjoyed the experience, even though it was so muddy. I am so happy that I finished first.”

Darren Redfern, headteacher, said: “She arn the race tactically, choosing to wait for a section of steep hill to make her move to the front, and that is where she stayed. We are all very proud of her.”
