A 52-year-old man died and three others are in a critical condition after the cars they were travelling in crashed on Saturday.

Victor Watkins, from the Pontefract area, was killed after his Peugeot collided with a Ford Focus on Hemsworth Road in Hemsworth at around 12.25am.

The four men who were travelling in the Ford were all taken to hospital.

Police said three of them, aged 22, 22 and 23, remain in critical but stable conditions.

A 20-year-old man was also in the car and suffered minor injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened near the junction with Water Lane on Saturday.

Police Sergeant Carl Quinn, from West Yorkshire Police’s major collision enquiry team, said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle beforehand to come forward to assist with our investigation.”
