Emergency services staff had to drag a man from the River Calder in Wakefield this morning (Saturday).

Police were called to Bridge Street at 12.10am, where a man in his early-30s was ankle-deep in the water near Chantry Bridge.

When he started to walk further into the river, officers dragged him to safety.

Both police and a fire and rescue team helped before an ambulance took him to hospital, where he was admitted under section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
