A team of canal ecologists got more than they bargained for last week when they discovered a monster mushroom growing by the banks of the Aire and Calder Navigation in Castleford.

The football-sized fungi was found growing in Fairies Hill when scientists from the Canal and River Trust were exploring the undergrowth for invasive weeds.

Phillippa Baron, from the Trust, said: “We just couldn’t believe it when we saw the mushroom, it was an absolute whopper.”

The edible ‘giant puffball’ weighed a kilo and was carved up and divided among hungry Trust workers.
