MP Jon Trickett is challenging the government over a decisionnot to give concessionary fuel allowance to workers at Kellingley Colliery.

The Hemsworth MP says some miners at the pit - which is due to close by the end of 2015 – have been told they will lose out on the allowance because they will lose their jobs before their 50th birthday.

Mr Trickett said: “Many of these men have been working in the mine for 30 years or more and they are losing their livelihoods through no fault of their own.

“It seems to be a gross injustice to then deprive them of concessionary fuel, especially as some of them are just short of 50 years old.”

“I have written to the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and also to Chris Kitchen, NUM president to see what we can do to challenge this unfair decision and stand up for the people who have worked hard in our mines for many years.”
