An amateur bodybuilder from Pontefract will flex his competitive muscles in a top national event at the weekend.
Dad-of-two Stuart Smith, 32, will compete in the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association (NABBA) British finals in Southport on Saturday.
He reached the finals after finishing second in his class in NABBA’s north east regional heat – the first time he had ever taken part in a competiton.
The top six at the national finals are then eligible to take part in the Mr Universe competition.
Mr Smith, of Kipling Grove, said: “I never expected to do so well to be honest. I will be on the stage with the best bodybuilders in Britain.
“If I come in the top six I will be competing for Mr Universe, which would just be amazing.”
Mr Smith, who is a construction worker for British Gas, started training at the Asylum Gym in Selby 15 years ago.
He said: “I have always wanted to get big and keep in shape but Martin Holroyd, my trainer at the gym, told me to enter the competitions. I am really enjoying it and I would just like to thank everyone for their support.”
Mr Smith’s wife Gemma said: “I am the proudest wife in the world and his two children are very proud too.”
