New mayor appointed at Wakefield Council

Kevin Barker has been appointed as Wakefield's new mayor.

The Wakefield Rural councillor was appointed to the position today at a mayor-making ceremony at County Hall.

Coun Barker, who worked for Leeds City Council’s parks department for 42 years, will be supported by his daughter-in-law Kirsty Barker, who has taken on the role of mayoress.

The mayor has chosen the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Samantha Sykes Foundation as his chosen charities during his year in office.

The new deputy mayor is Stuart Heptinstall, a Wakefield East councillor and former miner. His granddaughter Charlotte is the deputy mayoress.

Council leader Peter Box said: “I am sure they will represent the district with dignity and commitment, and I hope they enjoy their year in office.”
