PUPILS from Halfpenny Lane J&I School in Pontefract will have a bird’s eye view of the Olympic torch when it passes through the town on Monday – thanks to a car dealership.
Harratts Renault on Jubilee Way has agreed to clear its forecourt of cars so the entire school can watch the torch procession.
Geraldine Lindley, headteacher, said: “It’s a momentous time for Pontefract and the torch coming through, and as it’s only down the road we wanted to give everyone the chance to see it.
“But after talking to the police, there really isn’t the cover on the roads and I was concerned for pupils’ safety. As I drive past Harratts every day and I thought ‘that’s a good spot’ so I rang and was invited to go down, where they agreed to move the cars and banners so we could enjoy the view.”
Pupils have been making torches, headdresses and maracas to take down to the torch relay, which goes through Castleford, Pontefract and Ackworth on Monday.
John Cairns, of Harratts, said: “Anything we can do to help local schools is important to us. It gives a perfect viewing area.”
