A £70k project to refurbish playing fields in Hemsworth could get underway this summer.

Hemsworth Town Council will invest £70,000 to improving the fields off Cemetery Road.

It will use the money to upgrade the current football pitches, used by Hemsworth United and Hemsworth Highfields.

And it will create two new pitches, including a smaller field for younger age groups, as well as improving the car parking area.

Coun Tony Upson said people using the site had previously had trouble with discarded needles and dog fouling and had dealt with “poor” ground conditions on several occasions.

He said: “We budgeted the money to do this work because we know these issues need to be dealt with. It will be a big improvement to the area and an improvement to the playing conditions.”

Work to install a fence around the perimeter of the site to secure the fields could begin this summer.

And the rest of the project will be completed outside the football season over the coming years.

Coun Upson said: “We have had a history of people using quad bikes and motor bikes over the fields.

“From the health and safety side of things, we had situations where the lads were training and playing on what was just like a ploughed field.

“It could easily have led to injury.

“This investment couldn’t be anything but a vast improvement.

“From a playing side, we will have various areas and pitches where all age groups can be accommodated.

“It is going to be of immense value to be able to provide space for everybody in one place.”

The council will now go out to tender to select a developer to complete the work.

A start date will then be confirmed.
