The number of people claiming out-of-work benefits across the Pontefract and Castleford area rose to its highest in 16 years last month.

There were 3,743 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) across the Five Towns in March, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.

The figure is the highest since February 1997 and comes despite a fall in the number of people claiming JSA nationwide of 7,000.
