Hundreds of cannabis plants have been discovered in the basement of a former pub.

Police busted the cannabis farm when they were called to reports of a possible burglary at the old Spindle Tree pub in Stanley.

Officers attended the address on Aberford Road on Thursday, May 19 and uncovered 370 plants growing on the first floor and in the basement of the property, which had been left open.

They also found lights and growing equipment.

Inspector Mark Chamberlain of the Wakefield District Neighbourhood Police Team said: “We are continuing to investigate this substantial discovery and would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or have information about suspicious behaviour at this property in recent weeks, particularly during evenings.

“Forensic examinations have been conducted at the scene and we believe this was quite a sophisticated operation which may have been ongoing for some time.”

A vehicle was recovered from the premises and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers by calling 101.

Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
