Persistence paid off for Dennis Frain, who had to pursue the object of his affections for five months before getting a date – as he and wife Eileen celebrate 50 years of marriage.

The couple, both 81, of Rookhill Road, Pontefract, met at the Central pub in the town, but Eileen said she “wouldn’t entertain him at first”.

In the end she agreed to go out with him, saying: “I thought I’d give him a go and see what he was like, and it’s turned out for the best.”

The couple married at Holy Family Church on September 14 1963, just six weeks after Dennis proposed, with friends and family pitching in to help them on their big day.

Dennis worked as a labourer and scaffolder, while Eileen worked at the Dunhills liquorice factory.

They have one daughter, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and will be celebrating their anniversary with a meal for family and friends.
