WOMEN in the Five Towns are being urged to help beat cancer by entering this year’s Pontefract Cancer Research UK Race for Life.
Organisers want local women to recruit their mums, sisters, daughters, aunties, friends and workmates now the event – to be held in Pontefract Park on Sunday June 12 – has opened for entries.
Last year 3,900 women took part and raised an incredible £179,000. This year organisers want 6,100 women to put their best feet forward and raise £349,000 by walking, jogging or running 5k or 10k.
Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series where all the money raised goes to fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.
Imogen Johnson, Pontefract Race for Life event manager, said: “Race for Life in Pontefract is a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. The atmosphere is amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to people affected by cancer.
“This year we hope more women than ever before will take part. We need our Race for Life regulars, as well as women who took part years ago, to join together with many new faces to help save more lives.”
A promotional day was held at Castleford’s Xscape leisure complex on Tuesday to give women the chance to get more information and fundraising tips. To enter Pontefract’s 5k or 10k Race for Life events, visit www.racefor life.org or call 08716 411111.
