A reality TV sewing star has teamed up with a long-serving Castleford tailor to deliver a fashion first - tweed for tots.

Julie Gromett, who starred on BBC 2 The Great British Sewing Bee, has joined forces with Ron and Vera Winter of Northern Men’s and Boyswear, of Lower Oxford Street.

The trio have launched the Tweedy Gromett by Braggy range, which was debuted at Chatsworth International Horse Trials last weekend.

Mr Winter, who has worked in the clothes trade for 49 years, said: “Everybody was going mad for them. We put a large collection together, 140 to 150 waistcoats, mainly children’s wear. Nobody had ever seen it before. It’s so quirky.”

They have been busy taking orders following the show and being on Look North last week.

Meanwhile, Mrs Gromett, a housing officer in Castleford, is also encouraging people to sign up for free sewing skills courses in Pontefract next month.

She said: “Sewing is completely liberating. It gives you the ability to turn visions into reality and produce something you can be proud of. It appeals to all ages.”

The eight-week sewing course, run by WDH and Wakefield Council, is at Eastbourne Independent Living Scheme Community Centre on Eastbourne Close from Monday, June 2 between noon and 3pm. To book a place email or call 01977 788647.
