Shop local cash will bring an ice rink for Christmas

A scheme encouraging people to shop local has raised more than £3,000 for the Ossett community. And the money will be used to fund a Christmas ice rink weekend.

The Ossett Loyalty Card was launched by the OLC Community Interest Company earlier this year. Businesses pay £25 to join the scheme, which is backed by The Express, and people can purchase cards for £10, giving them access to a range of discounts from 91 businesses in the town.

The money raised goes into a charity fund with the aim of improving life in the town and attracting more visitors.

Debbie Squires, who runs Squires Family Deli and is part of the OLC collective, said: “Our intention is to do this every year, bringing people in from further a field and helping to keep Ossett going.

“It’s such an amazing town with a lovely loyal community that is very up and coming right now. We are proud to be part of helping this happen.

“The loyalty card has been bought by hundreds of people so far. And we have now reached 100 businesses.”

The Ice Rink, sponsored by Ossett Tyre House, will be held on December 10 and 11.

There will be more than 30 craft, food and toy stalls, many held by local businesses, as well as food vans and a bar marquee.

Bar 42 will host an outdoor barbecue and will be selling mulled wine. There will also be face painting, Reptillia animal petting, and a raffle. Santa will be in the Town Hall and there will be carol, organ, ukelele, brass band, dance and theatre performances.

Tickets to skate on the ice rink, which runs from noon until 8pm on the Saturday and from 10am until 5pm on the Sunday cost £6 for adults and £4 for children under 12. They can be pre-booked at Alicia Mai on Bank Street.
