SINGER Gary Grace will turn high notes into bank notes for the Children in Need appeal by selling his specially-recorded charity single.

The professional singer – who has toured the country for the last 12 years with his musical tribute show Kings of Swing – recorded a cover version of Matt Monro’s song Born Free for the BBC appeal.

Mr Grace, of Pontefract Road, Ackworth, said: “It is nice to do something for the children and the song I’ve chosen to cover is also very relevant to the charity. All children are born equal but some children find themselves in difficulty.

“Every year the Children in Need weekend comes around and every year I think ‘I could and I should do something about it’ but in previous years I’ve left it too late.”

The single has been on sale at the Brown Cow pub, on Pontefract Road, since last week and is available to download from Mr Grace’s website.

Mr Grace, 52, said: “I dare not really estimate how much it might raise as I don’t want to tempt fate but I would love to reach for a four-figure sum if people decide to purchase it.

“It isn’t a song which has been done to death but it is a song that everyone knows so I hope that will help me sell more copies.

“I have raised money for a few charities in the past but not exclusively for a children’s charity before, but this year it is going to big and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

Mr Grace began singing at the age of eight and performed as a child soprano, first at school and then in local amateur performances in Northamptonshire.

He has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and appeared as lead vocalist with many bands before turning professional as a solo performer in the 1990s.

He’s currently performing his Kings of Swing tribute show in theatres around the UK and will be at Seven Arts, in Leeds, on Friday November 18.

Tickets for the show cost £13.50 (with £2.50 from each ticket going to Children In Need) and are available from the box office on 0113 262 6777.

The charity single Born Free is available to download from www.garygrace.co.uk/merchandise, priced £1, and on CD from the Brown Cow pub for £2.50.
