CARING sister Frances Darcy is urging Featherstone businesses to help raise up to £15,000 to build a community room for disabled residents.
Mrs Darcy – whose brother John Winn lives at the Jubilee House independent living scheme on Wakefield Road – is appealing to businesses to raise the cash and help residents at the scheme, for people with learning and physical disabilities, socialise.
Mrs Darcy has raised £1,500 so far with the help of social care charity Choice Support by holding a car boot sale and selling the family silver.
But she is now hoping businesses in the community will adopt the cause as their own and help bring her plans to reality.
She said: “These people need support to have a social life. John is happy but life is a bit quieter than it was before for him.
“There’s no communal area for them to hold birthday celebrations or a coffee morning so it’s quite isolating and people often need a nudge to get them mixing.
“That isn’t going to happen if they are in their own little flats with nowhere to meet. We have started up our efforts but I’m just a relative, so it’s an appeal for people’s generosity – to donate money to the cause.”
Mrs Darcy, from Hemsworth, said John, 60, lived at Mill Garth House independent living scheme in Pontefract until it closed and moved into Jubilee House in February last year.
Jubilee House – which was converted from a pub into a home for 13 residents – works with Choice Support which provides care packages to help residents remain independent in their own two-bedroom flats.
Building manager Penny Brown, from Choice Support, said: “During the summer we have an outside area where the residents can meet but in the winter they have nowhere. Everyone here would benefit from the extension.”
Mrs Darcy added: “Businesses might be able to offer materials or building work, but mainly they might be able to make a charitable donation and adopt this as a local cause, because they’re local too – particularly business near Wakefield Road.”
To make a donation, send a cheque made payable to Mrs F V Darcy to Jubilee House Mates, 17 Greenfield Road, Hemsworth, WF9 4RL.
