Work started last week on a new skate park in Castleford.

Wakefield Council began the work at King George’s Field, Half Acres, with the support of the park’s friends’ group.

The skate park work is expected to be completed by Christmas and the friends’ group also hopes to build a new play area at King George’s Field.

Dorothy Dunn, group chairwoman, said: “We are over the moon that work has started.

“The skate park has been almost five years in the making and the children can’t wait for it to open.”

The facility, funded by money from Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), Wakefield Council Streetscene, Public Health Wakefield, Wakefield and District Housing and a contribution from the friends’ group, is expected to open next spring.

The group now hopes to apply for grants for the play area.

Coun Maureen Cummings, cabinet member for environment and communities said: “I am really pleased work has begun on the Castleford skate park, which will no doubt be a great asset to the local community.

“I look forward to spring, when the official opening takes place.”

The group is also looking for new volunteers to get involved and help with the plans as well as organising fundraising events.
