A YOUNG athlete from Allerton Bywater put on a gymnastic display with his team-mates to raise money to help fund a trip to championship trials.
Justin Beardsmore, 16, of Woodside Grove, was at the Asda supermarket in Glass Houghton with friends from Wakefield Gymnastics Club last Saturday collecting cash to go towards sending the team to trials and then hopefully to the European Championship in Bulgaria.
Justin – who won a silver and two bronze medals in the last year’s European Championship – and the team raised more than £200 after being invited to the store as part of Asda’s Sporting Chance campaign.
The national campaign gives families the chance to collect vouchers from the supermarket for free sports sessions during the school holidays.
Children will be able to use the vouchers to have a go at various sports, including karate and dance, at centres across the district.
Eileen Passmore from Asda said: “It was a really good day and it was great to help raise money for Justin and the team. Quite a few shoppers were stopping to see what was going on and I know that from the donations we received we will have smashed our target of £200.”
Vouchers for the Sporting Chance free sports sessions can be picked up from the supermarket. Visit www.asda.com/freeactivities for a full list of participating sports venues.
