The concert will be staged at the church in Market Place, Pontefract on Saturday, January 30 at 7.30pm.

Performers will include New College music students and Wakefield Community Gospel Choir, who should provide an interesting and varied concert for all tastes.

A spokesman said: “Pontefract Food Bank is run by volunteers and supported by voluntary donations of food and money, it aims to help local people in food crisis. The food bank welcomes people who are referred by workers such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and teachers who have assessed that there is an urgent need for food.”

It works to help people in crisis and, if possible, directs them to sources of help which can help lift people out of trouble and get them to manage their lives independently.

The spokesman added: “Wakefield District City of Sanctuary is a small voluntary organisation that helps refugees who have been allowed to claim asylum in this country, including people from conflict areas such as Syria.

“Its volunteers help with friendship, advice and support, working closely with organisations such as the Red Cross Family Tracing Service.

“It also runs a clothing store which provides basic essential clothing and footwear to people of all ages including children and babies arriving in this country after long journeys and time spent living in refugee camps.”

St Giles has helped both groups in the past with food and clothing.

Tickets are available from St Giles’ Church on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and also on the door on the night.

Tickets cost £10 per person, which will include a glass of wine during the interval.
