Families can enjoy a host of fun activities at Fryston Woods as a summer scheme of events kick off next week with a natural play day.

The play day, on Wednesday August 7, will feature simple carving techniques, wild cooking, weaving with natural materials and other crafts and games, and will run from 11am to 3pm.

There will also be a green wood carving course running throughout the day for over 16s. Places need to be booked in advance and there is a £5 returnable deposit.

The event, at the entrance to Fryston Wood on Kendal Drive, Ferry Fryston, is taking place in conjunction with Castleford Heritage Trust’s Fryston Woods access and improvement project, which aims to open up and improve local woodland so more people can enjoy the natural environment.

As well as the play day, the trust is running a series of events in the green space around Airedale and Ferry Fryston. A forest school will take place every Tuesday from August 6 to 27, at 1.30pm-5pm for children aged 15-18, learning outdoor skills.

Nature walks take place on Thursdays, August 8-22 at 10am from The Place Cafe, Airedale, and 10.30am from Fryston Miners’ Welfare Club, while an allotment clear up takes place on August 21 from 11am to 3pm at Well Wood.

Summer activities end with a play day in Well Wood on August 28 from 11am to 2pm. To book places on the wood carving course or the forest school, contact Paul Roberts on 01977 556741.
